“So I’m presuming those two…things? Can I call them things? Are launch pads from the Cape?” I asked Kami Lambert, as we stood watching the first session in the water. After Tracy and Damian had ventured back to their tent, I’d found Kami at the waterline.
Kami nodded to me and smiled, looking like she always does—relaxed, in spite of the energy of the day—and explained how Skye, who wasn’t initially planning to surf at this event, had entered after a participant or two ended up canceling.
“So how long have you guys lived around here?” I asked.
“Twenty-five years; we’re about 50 minutes south,” she said, her attention still drawn towards the sea, where participants were being pushed out into perfect, fun-sized brown rollers. It was a far cry from the conditions in Stuart and Jupiter, and a much larger swell size compared to the conditions seen in Deerfield Beach.
I decided to ask the question that every SFA family has an instant answer to: “What was your first event?”
“Ponce Inlet when Skye was 10,” she said. “She’s 14 now; that was August 2011. I’d heard about SFA from a friend. Her son and Skye went to school together. So I jumped on Facebook and saw the photos of people surfing and immediately wanted to go.”
“Many of the families I’ve spoken to jumped right into attending as many events as they could after that, instead of slowly attending more and more. Was that the case for you guys as well?”
“At Ponce Inlet, we fell in love and did three events: Ponce, St. Augustine, and Jacksonville Beach,” she answered. “During the Jacksonville event, Skye actually got lost. Don said something on the microphone—that the weather could get bad, and that we needed to get off the beach. So Skye hightailed it to the bathrooms at the hotel; she is mortified of storms. Don ended up blowing the lost-child siren until someone found her in the bathroom…but anyways, at her first event, she stood up.”
“During the first session?” I asked.
“The very first wave!” she excitedly replied. “She’s always been a water bug. She does gymnastics and that’s helped with her balance. We used gymnastics as an occupational therapy type of thing.”
“So what was the diagnosis like?” I asked, fighting to be heard above the roar of volunteers and families cheering for surfers. “Was it a doctor who initially gave you the diagnosis, or did you notice something that set off alarms?”
“It was actually my mom who said something to me,” she recalled. “She was concerned because Skye wasn’t answering to her name. Not only that, she would spin bowls around and around, take puzzles apart and put them back together, turn them upside down and put them together. She would page through books over and over again. I thought that was typical at first, but as time wore on…it was the extent to which she was doing these things. I mean, for hours.
“She went to occupational therapy twice a week and we had a speech therapist come twice a week to improve the muscle tone and sensory issues in in her mouth.
